What Are You Looking For In Your Next Legal Job?

This week, a website that supports staffing firms posted the five factors they found that applicants consider when looking for a new job.  They are (in this order):

  1. Pay
  2. Benefits
  3. Career path
  4. Work-life balance
  5. Recognition

That seems a bit shortsighted.  While pay is important, many of the candidates we work with are not primarily motivated by compensation, but by improving their career by finding a firm or company that aligns with their chosen career path (which doesn’t necessarily mean that they are only looking for vertical growth).  Many have deeply personal reasons for leaving and/or pursuing another position.

Over the years, we’ve seen many factors that have motivated candidates to move.  Among them are platform, geography, firm/company financial stability, bill rate, ability to do more (or less) on a file, that they are currently bored in their position, to follow their value system or to follow a particular mentor.

We’d love to hear what you think.  What factors do you consider when looking for a new position?
